Dishwasher explodes during inspection

Writer: Mike DiehlMike Diehl

I was flabbergasted to find out that there existed a case of a dishwasher exploding on a home inspection. Turns out that hydrogen gas can build up in the water supply when the water in a home hasn't been used for a period of time. Hydrogen gas is not water soluble and can be released when the water supply is opened. If there is a source of ignition, the gas can explode. Wow!!

If you own a vacation home or have a home that sits for long periods of time, it is best to open the water faucets and let the water run for a few minutes before using the dishwasher or any device that might be a source of ignition near the water. DONT SMOKE while opening the faucets!

Please read the following article for more on this crazy situation.
